We have been encouraging everyone we know to switch to Linux. Linux is an alternative to operating systems like Microsoft's Windows and Apple's Mac OS. Linux comes in a dizzying array of choices, but we've settled on a short list of favorites which we highly recommend. All of our preferred versions (called distributions or "distros") are completely free, and we use them daily for ourselves and our clients.
Linux tends to be more secure, faster, and more stable. Windows is more compatible with hardware and software. Linux works better than Windows on older hardware and low-memory computers. Linux servers are also far less expensive than Windows servers, especially when adding new workstation licenses. There are other tradeoffs to consider, so give us a call to talk about your specific situation - (432) 218-7044.
Most any version of Linux can do double duty as a server or a workstation, but we find that for business use it is better to use a distro that specializes in server duties. Centos is our preferred server system due to its great setup and flexible options. It is a near relative of RedHat, probably the premier Linux Server OS, so it can use all of the software and tools designed for RedHat. Most everything you need for a typical network setup is included in the software repository, with many additional tools packaged in the "rpm" format that RedHat/Centos prefers.
Modern Desktop computers are all about the GUI - the point and click pretties that help you work and play. Linux is no slouch when it comes to eye candy. The two major GUIs on Linux, Gnome and KDE, both support the expected customizations of wallpaper and themes. Because Linux is more open than its more common competitor, the number of options in Linux is huge. If you have adequate hardware, you can add some amazing effects to your computer's display using a program called Compiz. While the idea is to add pizazz to your PC, there are a few spiffy items that can boost your productivity, too. Our recommended Linux desktop is MEPIS 8. We've been using MEPIS since about version 3.5, and have watched this distro mature. We like the fact that it is based on Debian and uses KDE. This makes the leap from the current mainstream OS very easy.
This overview was light on details, but we hope it motivates some of you to try Linux. We think you will enjoy the experience, and find that your machine runs faster with fewer problems with Linux in control.
